Photoacoustic Imaging of a Non- Targeted Contrast Agent in Breast- Tissue-Mimicking Phantoms

چکیده
Our preliminary photoacoustic data indicates that we could detect small objects (tubes with a cross-section of 1mm) containing 100 micro moles of contrast agent up to about 5cm in the breast-tissue like environment. For the case of 10 micro moles concentration of the dye, we could detect such small objects up to about 3cm. This depth can be increased further (by at least another 2cm) by the use of a stronger contrast agents that are better suited for photoacoustic applications, more suitable ultrasound transducers as well as larger objects.

Virus-mimicking nano-constructs as a contrast agent for near infrared photoacoustic imaging.
We report the first proof-of-principle demonstration of photoacoustic imaging using a contrast agent composed of a plant virus protein shell, which encapsulates indocyanine green (ICG), the only FDA-approved near infrared chromophore. These nano-constructs can provide higher photoacoustic signals than blood in tissue phantoms, and display superior photostability compared to non-encapsulated ICG...

We develop a novel dual-modal contrast agent-encapsulated-ink poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microbubbles and nanobubbles-for photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging. Soft gelatin phantoms with embedded tumor simulators of encapsulated-ink PLGA microbubbles and nanobubbles in various concentrations are clearly shown in both photoacoustic and ultrasound images. In addition, using photoacousti...
متن کاملMultiplex photoacoustic molecular imaging using targeted silica-coated gold nanorods
The establishment of multiplex photoacoustic molecular imaging to characterize heterogeneous tissues requires the use of a tunable, thermally stable contrast agent targeted to specific cell types. We have developed a multiplex photoacoustic imaging technique which uses targeted silica-coated gold nanorods to distinguish cell inclusions in vitro. This paper describes the use of tunable targeted ...
متن کاملMolecular photoacoustic imaging of breast cancer using an actively targeted conjugated polymer
Conjugated polymers (CPs) are upcoming optical contrast agents in view of their unique optical properties and versatile synthetic chemistry. Biofunctionalization of these polymer-based nanoparticles enables molecular imaging of biological processes. In this work, we propose the concept of using a biofunctionalized CP for noninvasive photoacoustic (PA) molecular imaging of breast cancer. In part...
متن کاملCarbon nanotubes as photoacoustic molecular imaging agents in living mice.
Photoacoustic imaging of living subjects offers higher spatial resolution and allows deeper tissues to be imaged compared with most optical imaging techniques. As many diseases do not exhibit a natural photoacoustic contrast, especially in their early stages, it is necessary to administer a photoacoustic contrast agent. A number of contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging have been suggested p...
